Coming to Australia: post-war immigration

In 1946 a great immigration program began. It was encouraged by a desire to rapidly increase the population to lessen the chance of invasion by a future enemy. The other main reason to provide a large base of workers for the nation's expanding factories and ambitious infrastructure projects.
